MSOffice Update - Users Can Now Assign Sensitivity Labels To Documents And Emails

Ever thought of labelling your documents to indicate the level of it's importance or privacy? Well, worry no more because Microsoft just actualized your thoughts into reality.

Microsoft yesterday made known the availability of  sensitivity labeling feature in Office applications on Android, iOS and Macintosh systems. What this feature does is that it enable users to apply sensitivity labels to their files and emails to make them compliant with their organization’s data/info policies.

What Is A Sensitivity Label

When you assign a sensitivity label to a document or email, it’s simply like a tag that is:

Customizable. You can create categories for different
levels of sensitive content in your organization, such as
Personal, Public, General, Confidential, and Highly Confidential.

Clear text. Because the label is in clear text, it’s available for third-party apps and services to apply protective actions to labeled content.

Persistent. After a sensitivity label is applied to content, it
persists in the metadata of that email or document. This means the label roams with the content, including the protection settings, and becomes the basis for applying and enforcing policies.

In the Office apps, a sensitivity label simply appears as a tag
on an email or document.

Each item of content can have a single sensitivity label applied
to it. But note that an item can have both a single sensitivity
label and a single retention label applied to it.

Well after you might have applied the sensitivity label on your document,  the document after being shared across various platforms would still bear the label information - sensitive.

The Following Office Apps Will Support The Sensitivity Labeling Feature:

  • Apple's Mac: Word, PowerPoint, Excel & Outlook
  • iPhone iOS: Word, PowerPoint &
  • Excel, Outlook (coming soon)
  • Android: Word, PowerPoint & Excel, Outlook (coming soon)
