How To Use Control Panel Shortcuts

When installing a new Windows Operating System like Windows 10 some users would want to reconfigure their default settings through the control panel to customize settings like increasing mouse speed, changing mouse icon, changing language, keyboard functions, adding restore points, Windows sounds, Windows animations, Creating user account, setting passwords and many more.

Doing this will prompt the user to browse through various headings and sub headings before getting an actual setting which can be a little annoying and time wasting.

Windows OS versions like Vista and 2000 have different placement of some control panel functions compared to newer OS like Windows 8 and 10 so it's a bit confusing when accessing the Control panel.

To ease our work and save time we ought to use the Windows Run menu option to access the control panel.

To access the Windows Run menu press Win+R ( press the windows button with four square grid icons and "R" together), a dialog box with a text input box will appear at the bottom left side of your screen, it works on Windows 7, 8, 10.

All control panel shortcuts end with *.cpl
You can run any of these commands either by typing them into the Start Menu search bar, pressing Win+R to open the run dialog box and entering them there, or even from the command line by using the command “control [example.cpl]”.

In very rare cases, the shortcut will only work via command line (noted below by the inclusion of the “control” prefix in the command listing.

  • control access.cpl : Accessibility Options
  • appwiz.cpl : Add/Remove Programs
  • bthprops.cpl : Bluetooth Devices
